This visa allows you to stay in the UK legally while you pursue your studies. It also ensures you meet the UK government’s requirements, such as proving you have the financial means to support yourself.  

Types of UK Student Visas in 2026

The UK student visa routes have changed since April 2026. 

Now, the Tier 4 student visa does not exist. Here are complete details regarding the new student visa for the UK in 2026.

1.    Student Route Visa 

• New Visa Fee: The application fee is now £558 for 2026. 
• New IHS Fee: The Immigration Health Surcharge has increased to £776 per year. 
• Higher Living Costs: You must now show funds of £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 per month outside London. 
• eVisa System: A full switch to an eVisa is underway, replacing physical BRP cards.

Note that the UK is refusing visas to students from  Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan for at least 18 months. The duration of the post-study work visa is shortened to 18 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. PhD graduates will still get 3 years.

2. Short-Term Study Visa for 2026

This visa is for those aiming to study a short course in the UK for a short course for a duration of less than six months. It is a convenient and quick option for students wanting to learn English in the UK.  

• Visa Fee Increasing: The fee is currently £214 but will increase to £228 from 8 April 2026. 
• IHS Fee: The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776. 
• Eligibility: For English language courses of 6 to 11 months. Courses up to 6 months can be studied on a Visitor visa. 
• Application: Must apply online from outside the UK. 
• Students are not allowed to work (paid or unpaid). Nor can they start a business or a professional job.

How to Apply for a UK Student Visa: Step-by-Step Process

To apply for a UK Student visa, you must meet the following key requirements:

• Age Requirement: You must be 16 or over on the date you submit your application. However, children below this age can apply for a Child Student visa.
• You must confirm your seat by getting an offer of enrollment in a course by a UK-based educational institution. The college or university will provide you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) with a reference number. The offer remains valid for only six months. 
• Genuine Student Requirement: You must be a “genuine student”. You must show your intention of studying the exact course you applied for. The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) will assess whether you are trying to immigrate instead of studying. 
• You must prove your knowledge of English. The required level depends on your course. For example, for a degree level, you need CEFR level B2. Below degree level: CEFR level B1 is required.
• There is a requirement to pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT). But that is not required for students from the US, Canada, or Australia. 
• Financial Requirements: You must prove the availability of funds, including money to pay your tuition fee for the first year, living expenses up to nine months, and follow the 28-Day Rule. This means you will pay this money into a bank account where it will be seized for 28days.

Core Documents Required

• Valid Passport or other valid travel documentation
• The CAS with a unique reference number issued by your licensed sponsor or the institution. No CAS means no visa.  
• All the documents of financial evidence discussed. Living costs £1,529/month in London, £1,171/month outside London.
• Proof of the SELT Test unless you don’t need it.   
• Tuberculosis (TB) Test Certificate: It is needed in 2026 for Pakistani students; the validity required is 6 months.

Additional Documents, If Needed

• ATAS Certificate is needed for certain postgraduate courses and research in sensitive STEM subjects (e.g., engineering, technology, science). Apply at least 6 weeks (30 working days) before your visa application. You must provide your ATAS certificate before applying for your visa.
• Parental Consent Letter & Proof of Relationship: If you are under 18 at the time of application, you need a signed letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) 
• Certified Translations of your documents not in English or Welsh
• Previous Qualifications: If you are studying below degree level, you may need to provide original transcripts and certificates of qualifications listed on your CAS.  
• Written Consent from Financial Sponsor: If a government or international scholarship agency awarded you funding for fees and living costs. 

The 28-Day Rule and Bank Statement Timing

The funds you rely on must have been held in your bank account for 28 consecutive days. During this period, the balance must never fall below the required total amount. The closing balance on your bank statement must be dated no more than 31 days before you submit your online visa application.

Acceptable Financial Evidence

The Home Office accepts several forms of financial evidence:

• Bank Statements: Must clearly show your name, account number, the bank’s name and logo, and the required balance for 28 days.
• Student Loans: A letter from a regulated student loan company confirming your loan will cover your tuition and/or living costs.
• Official Financial Sponsorship: A letter from a government, university, or recognized sponsor confirming the details of your sponsorship and the amount they will cover.
• Scholarships: A letter from the scholarship provider (or a note on your CAS) confirming the amount and length of the award.
• Parent’s or Guardian’s Account: You can use money held in a parent’s or legal guardian’s name. You must provide their bank statement, your birth certificate, and a signed letter from them confirming their relationship to you and their consent to use the funds for your studies.

Visa Fees

Applying from Outside the UK

If you are applying from Pakistan, you will need to book an appointment at your nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide your biometrics. You will attend this appointment in person, where your fingerprints will be scanned and your photograph taken.

As part of the UK’s transition to a digital immigration system, successful applicants will receive an eVisa, a digital record of their immigration status, rather than a physical sticker in their passport .  

Applying from Inside the UK

If you are already in the UK and extending or switching to a Student visa, you will usually need to book an appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) service point to enrol your biometrics . You must do this within 45 working days of submitting your application .

Alternatively, you may be able to verify your identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app .  

Standard processing times for a Student visa can vary depending on the country you are applying from and the volume of applications being processed at that time.

• Applying from outside the UK: You’ll usually get a decision within 3 weeks of your appointment .
• Applying from inside the UK (extending or switching): The standard processing time is usually around 8 weeks .

Working Rights

As a Student visa holder studying a full-time course at degree level, you are generally permitted to work, but there are important restrictions you must follow.

Key Work Limits:

• Term-time Work: You can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time. A “week” is defined as any seven-day period starting on a Monday.
• Vacation Work: You are permitted to work full-time during official holiday or vacation periods. The University of Suffolk provides specific vacation dates for undergraduate students, including Winter Break and Spring Break

Restrictions on Type of Work:
You cannot undertake the following activities while on a Student visa:

• Self-employment or business activity, including freelancing, consultancy, and setting up your own business.
• Filling a full-time permanent vacancy.
• Working as a professional sportsperson, coach, or entertainer

Dependants Updates

The rules for bringing dependents (your partner and children under 18) to the UK have changed significantly. Many taught postgraduate students can no longer bring family members.

Who Can Bring Dependants?

You can now only bring dependants if you meet one of the following criteria:

• Research-Based Postgraduate Degree: You are studying a PhD, other doctoral qualification, or a full-time research-based higher degree (e.g., MPhil, ResM) of 9 months or longer at a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance. Exception: Dependants are exempt from the financial requirement if they are applying from inside the UK and have been living in the UK with valid immigration permission for 12 months or more

The UK is transitioning to a fully digital immigration system, and the Student visa is now primarily issued as an eVisa – an online record of your immigration status that replaces physical documents like the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card or a vignette sticker in your passport.

What is an eVisa?

Key points:

The move to eVisas has been implemented in phases:

• 15 July 2025: Main Student applicants stopped receiving 90-day vignette stickers.
• 25 February 2026: The transition to eVisas was fully enforced for most visa nationals, replacing physical vignettes for new visit visa applications. By this date, the full digital system for travel permission was also being enforced.
• By the end of 2026: The UK Government intends to stop issuing all physical visa vignette stickers in passports, with all successful applicants receiving an eVisa.

How to Access Your eVisa

If you are a new student and did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app as part of your application, you will need to create a UKVI account to access your eVisa.

You will need :

• A phone number and email address
• Your visa application number (a Global Web Form (GWF) or Unique Application Number (UAN))
• A valid passport 

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is not a physical certificate but a virtual, digital record that your sponsoring university creates in the UK government’s Sponsorship Management System (SMS). It is your unique ticket to apply for a Student visa.

How to Get Your CAS
Your university will issue your CAS once you have firmly accepted an unconditional offer and met any other conditions, such as paying a tuition fee deposit. The CAS will confirm your personal details, course information, and details of any tuition fees you have already paid.
